Which Production Service is Right for You?

There are different types of production facilities available, depending on your location. Each offers features and benefits which must be weighed before a decision can be made.

LOCAL TV STATIONS - Many TV stations offer production services. Their rates are generally very attractive, and some can produce highly sophisticated productions. TV stations are driven by broadcast schedules and air-time commitments always take precedence over independent production. This may force you to compromise the quality and schedule of your project. TV production people are often more oriented toward video hardware than they are to the needs of training and promotional presentations, forcing you to assume some of the directorial responsibility.

FREELANCE PRODUCER - Independent producers and directors keep their overhead low by sub-contracting most production services and renting or leasing equipment on an "as needed" basis. While this generally works out satisfactorily, there's always the risk of compromising schedule and budget due to the lack of resources when needed. Freelance producers are creative and resourceful. Many are driven by the need for artistic achievement and the responsibility for maintaining schedule and cost containment often reverts to the client.

FULL-SERVICE PRODUCTION HOUSE - Today's full-service production firms offer a broad range of capabilities. Most possess the necessary facilities and in-house resources to take a project from concept through completion, duplication and even distribution. This assures control of each step of production. The producers and directors at a full-service house are concerned about content and quality; they know their reputation is on the line with every job they do. They are also business oriented and price their work to cover their fixed overhead expenses.

In summary, if your project is simple and if you're highly knowledgeable in film, tape and multi-media development so that you can maintain control over the project, using a TV station or a freelance producer/director may be practical and the most economical way to go.

If your project is complex, requires a high level of production value and you don't want the responsibility of managing the project and getting involved in its day-to-day problems, a full-service house will offer the best choice.
